Consolidation consultant contract approved; council comments to come
At a jointly-held meeting on July 10, New Paltz town and village leaders spoke about how an effort to consolidate these two local governments might move forward. New York county's latest trans athlete ban draws lawsuits from attorney general, civil rights group
MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — The New York attorney general and the New York Civil Liberties Union on Monday sued a county on Long Island over its latest move to ban transgender females from playing on women’s sports teams at county facilities. The separate lawsuits came on the same day Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican, signed the policy into law. Months earlier, a judge had blocked a similar rule Blakeman put in place through an executive order. Both cases argue the ban violates state anti-discrimination laws. “With this law, Nassau County is once again attempting to exclude transgender girls and women from participating in sporting events while claiming to support fairness,” Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, said in a statement.

Sinterklaas, Rhinebeck’s Annual Winter Festival, is Canceled for 2024, Leaving its Future in Limbo
The annual winter festival Sinterklaas, which attracts upwards of 10,000 people each year and has taken place since 2008 in the Village of Rhinebeck the first weekend in December, will not be returning to Rhinebeck this winter due to funding and staffing concerns. Sinterklaas organizer and artistic director Jeanne Fleming told the Pilot that this was one of the most difficult decisions she has had to make. She said that due to a significant budget deficit from last year, waning financial support, and a loss of some key volunteers and organizers, they are pausing their efforts and taking the remainder of the year to “provide the time to reach out, rethink and reimagine.”
