SOUTHWEST HARBOR — A great turnout on Friday made for the annual Junior Hospice Regatta that drew young sailors from Blue Hill, Northeast Harbor, Seal Harbor and others from across Mount Desert Island. MDI Community Sailing Center hosted the regatta and the out-of-town sailors.

Sawdust catches fire outside Rockland’s Mechanic Street house
ROCKLAND — The homeowners at 86 Mechanic Street weren’t home Tuesday night, but fortunately, their neighbors were. The owners had been staying in a hotel for the night while their freshly refinished floors dried when, at approximately 9 p.m., July 16, 2024, neighbors became aware of a burning smell in the area and started to investigate. They looked next door and found trash bags on fire in the next driveway, with flames starting to climb up a corner of the vinyl siding. The bags were filled mostly with sawdust, but contained some other materials involved in refinishing floors – thinner and rags.

Matching grant helps restore historic building
HOLDEN--The historic Holden Town Hall building is getting a much needed upgrade. The two-story building, located on the Main Road in Holden, was built back in the 1870s when bathrooms were not indoors. Now, thanks to a $25,000 matching grant from the Lawrence Family Foundation, a bathroom is finally being added to the historic building and the first floor is also getting insulated.
