The first annual David Wolmetz Memorial Fundraiser at Urban Air Lake Grove is set for June 9, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Hosted in partnership with Stony Brook Cancer Center, the event will support blood cancer research.

“Dave was the heart and soul of Urban Air Lake Grove he loved it with every fiber of his being,” Keith Handler, cofounder of Urban Air Lake Grove, said in a news release about the fundraiser.

Urban Air Lake Grove is an indoor adventure park that combines aerial attractions with trampolines, climbing walls and spinning bumper cars, as LIBN reported in 2019 .

“It was our lifelong friendship and our desire as dads to create this place where kids could get off their electronics, run, jump, play and have fun and bring families together,” Handler said. “There’s no better way to honor Dave and his legacy by supporting the people who supported him.”

Back in October of 2018, Wolmetz was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He was admitted to Stony Brook Hospital's 19th floor, where his treatment started immediately. The staff at the Cancer Center and hospital treated him throughout his cancer journey, COVID, and subsequently several hospitalizations over the years due to his compromised immune system.

Wolmetz, according to the news release, never lost hope and trusted his entire Stony Brook cancer team immensely. He lost his battle on June 9, 2023.

Ticketed admission to the fundraiser includes access to all attractions at Urban Air Lake Grove, although height and weight restrictions apply. Additional scheduled activities include face painting, balloon artists, character meet-and-greets, live DJ, hourly raffles and more.

Proceeds raised throughout the fundraiser will go to the Stony Brook Cancer Center to support funding for blood cancer research to develop new, more effective, target treatments for cancer. For additional information about the fundraiser, click here .
