DANSVILLE, N.Y. ( WETM ) — Multi-million dollar upgrades at Stony Brook State Park’s swimming facilities were just finished, and more improvements are underway.

Governor Kathy Hochul’s Office announced on Monday that a $4.5 million improvement project for Stony Brook’s public swimming area is now complete. This tax-funded project saw the construction of a new 750-square-foot building that hosts lifeguard headquarters, a first aid area, and office space. Additionally, an obsolete bathhouse that was built in the ’60s was replaced with a new 1,700-square-foot one that has changing rooms, showers, and restrooms. The new buildings were built in a board and batten wood style that matches the park’s facilities that were built during the Great Depression.

More work on the park for this improvement project included the addition of a new playground, footpath renewals, and wayfinding sign improvements. A space where a food truck can operate during special events was added to the park as well.

“Stony Brook State Park is one of the Southern Tier’s great recreational attractions,” said State Senator Tom O’Mara. “This significant state investment to enhance the park’s public swimming facilities will ensure that Stony Brook remains an outstanding destination for future generations.”

Another improvement project started when the $4.5 million one ended. The new $6.4 million project will see the construction of a new park office, new and resurfaced parking lots, and updated tennis courts. The current project is expected to be completed in 2025.

Stony Brook State Park is located off of state Route 36 just south of Dansville in Steuben County. This 568-acre park was established in 1928 and features two stream-fed swimming pools, three miles of hiking trails, scenic waterfalls, campsites, cabins, and pavilions.
