Report: UConn head men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley shopping book deal

UConn men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley has followed in his father’s footsteps on the sideline and now, according to a report from Page Six , could be looking to join him on the bookshelf.

Page Six reported that Hurley is shopping a book and that their sources say he is willing to discuss the $70 million offer he received, and turned down, to become the next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers this summer. It was reported that a “top editor” was seen reading Hurley’s proposal on a Metro North train on July 16, and that Hurley will be meeting with potential co-authors.

His father, legendary high school basketball coach Bob Hurley Sr., was the main subject of Adrian Wojnarowski’s book, “The Miracle of St. Anthony,” which followed his team through the 2003-04 season. The book was released in 2005, about 12 years before the Jersey City school closed.

Dan Hurley’s story, which includes a long journey through the coaching ranks and some personal battles on and off the court, would likely detail his arduous journey to the top of college basketball, where he has led UConn to two consecutive national titles.

According to Page Six, a literary source said of Hurley’s proposal: “He gets into whether he should run a ‘fast break to the showtime Lakers.'”

Wojnarowski, now a top basketball insider at ESPN, broke the news that Hurley was being targeted by the Lakers and would fly out to Los Angeles for a meeting with owner Jeanie Buss and GM Rob Pelinka in June. Hurley ultimately decided that he and his family are happy with where they are now and declined the offer after mulling the decision, and attending a Billy Joel concert at Madison Square Garden, over the following days.

He opted to stay in Storrs and contend for a third national title in a row, despite losing four of five starters to the NBA Draft, and signed a new six-year, $50 million contract about a month later.
