Central Iowa is mourning the loss of a beloved community leader whose conservation efforts left a lasting mark on the city of Ames. Erwin “Erv” Klaas, 88, a former professor emeritus of animal ecology at Iowa State University, founder of Friends of Ada Hayden Heritage Park and a one-time Story County Citizen of the Year, passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2024.

The Central Iowa Regional Transportation Alliance (CIRTPA) is holding public information meetings across Central Iowa and asking for public input regarding the regional Comprehensive Safety Action Plan. The goal of the Plan is to enhance safety on local streets. The Plan will identify solutions and strategies for all people using city streets, including drivers, passengers, pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, and people with disabilities. Some of the strategies to be considered include bicycle lanes, roundabouts, and pedestrian hybrid beacons. The Plan is being developed for the incorporated cities within Boone, Dallas, Jasper, Madison, Marion, Story and Warren Counties. The unincorporated portions of the counties are part of a separate project.

Recovery center in Story County opening for residents seeking aid after tornado, severe storms
A disaster recovery center will be open for four days in Story County for residents recovering from severe storms, tornadoes and flooding this spring. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is providing the center from 1 to 7 p.m. June 22 and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 23-25. The center will be located at the Story County Administration Building in Nevada.
