Crunchyroll’s Most Expensive Subscriptions Are Getting A Price Hike

Crunchyroll is by far the best place on the internet to watch anime — and with the way Sony’s been snapping up companies these past few years, soon to be the only place on the internet to watch anime. The service has been expanding its offerings lately, and that comes at a cost, which is now being passed onto customers.

Crunchyroll has announced in an announcement post that it’s increasing the price of its two most expensive subscription tiers, Mega Fan and Ultimate Fan. The price increase will go into place soon in the US, Argentina, Colombia, France, and Portugal, and will see a modest increase for both of those tiers.

The Mega Fan tier will now cost $11.99 a month, up from $9.99, and the Ultimate Fan tier will now cost $15.99, up from $14.99. The Fan tier will be remaining at $7.99, and its ad-supported tier won’t be changing, either.

Crunchyroll is also reducing the length of its free trial period, cutting it down to just seven days instead of fourteen. The company says that these pricing increases are to help support new benefits and offerings, with more episodes and films available, an increase in simulcasts, and mobile games.

It also says that this is the first pricing increase since 2019, pointing out that prices in almost 100 territories decreased in July 2022. If we’re counting other territories, though, Crunchyroll is definitely fudging the numbers a little bit — some countries like Australia got price increases in October 2022. Ask me how I know.

The price increase comes after Crunchyroll closed down Funimation, transferring its customers from that service to Crunchyroll and in the process dramatically increasing the subscription cost for new Crunchyroll users . The move also saw the end of Funimation Digital copies, which were additional, streamed copies of purchased physical DVDs and Blu-rays.
