The Boy And The Heron Home Release Date Announced

Studio Ghibli’s latest film, The Boy and the Heron, made a huge splash when it was released in theaters late last year. After breaking records at the box office, fans have been eagerly awaiting news of a home release — and now we know exactly when you’ll be able to watch it in your own living room.

GKIDS, the distributor of The Boy and the Heron and a bunch of other Ghibli films in the US, has announced the home physical release for the film. The distributor has confirmed that The Boy and the Heron will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on July 9, 2024, and preorders are available now on the GKIDS webstore, Amazon, and Walmart.

In the US at least, the physical release will come in three flavors: 4K UHD + Blu-ray, Steelbook, and Blu-ray + DVD. All of them are fairly reasonably priced, and the Steelbook edition is blessed with an absolutely gorgeous cover, which you can see below:

Here’s the pricing from GKIDS’ webstore for each of the editions, too:

• The Boy and the Heron Steelbook – $44.98
• The Boy and the Heron 4K UHD + Blu-ray – $39.98
• The Boy and the Heron Blu-ray + DVD – $34.98

The first run print of all versions will include a limited edition poster, according to GKIDS, so if that’s something you’re interested in then you should probably order sooner rather than later. It’s unclear if this is only available on the GKIDS webstore or if Walmart and Amazon will also have the poster.

It seems like the film will also be available digitally via Apple TV, Prime Video, and Vudu, but no date is visible on any of the pages. Of course, outside of the US, The Boy and the Heron will be coming to Netflix at some point in the future, but no date is set for that just yet — though we’d imagine it won’t be too far behind the physical release, if not sooner.
