Indian Manga 'TRIO' Gets a Trailer for Desi Anime Adaptation

Otaku culture in India is on the rise. The country’s manga and anime fans have made their voices heard before when it comes to bringing international releases to the big screen and are now creating their own. TRIO is an ongoing manga from Kolkata-based Vaibhavi Studios, and the team is already at work creating an anime adaptation for the same.

I got to know about TRIO while attending this year’s Comic-Con in Mumbai, where I picked up the first volume of the manga. At the same event, Vaibhavi Studios showed the trailer for the anime, although it hasn’t been picked up by a distributor yet. The trailer promises a full release coming in winter 2026.

The manga, written by Sourav Roychoudhury, follows three young girls on an intergalactic adventure. The girls - Genia, Bonnie, and Sonnie, hail from Jamshedpur, a city in Jharkhand, India. Raised in an orphanage, the girls find an alien artifact from a scientifically advanced civilization that changes their lives. The manga draws inspiration from Indian mythology, with the creators claiming that it’s done safely to avoid hurting religious sentiments.

Set against the backdrop of a small Indian town- Jamshedpur, Trio introduces us to the lives of Genia aka GE, Bonnie aka BO, and Sonnie aka SO - three school girls raised in an orphanage bound by their shared curiosity and unbreakable bond. Their ordinary lives take a dramatic turn when they stumble upon a mysterious artifact that reveals the existence of extraterrestrial life. They face head-to-head against a powerful alien EKA from the planet Z (about 8000 Light years away from Earth). EKA belongs to a lineage of aliens which are 1 million years ahead of us humans in evolution. They are way superior to us in all aspects of our lives. How will the TRIO take on the alien onslaught? Who will help them? Will mankind survive?

The current plan for TRIO from Vaibhavi Studios is to create 7 arcs (roughly 50 episodes) for the anime and 20 volumes of the manga. At the time of writing, the third volume of TRIO is the latest to have been released.
