Netflix’s New Brothers Grimm Anime is Getting Turned Into a Manga

Normally, when a new anime is released, it’s usually based on a manga. Not always, of course, there are some totally original anime with no source material to work from, but a pretty big chunk of them were manga first. Netflix has decided to do things a little bit backwards with its new Grimm-inspired anime, and is turning it into a manga.

As reported by ANN, Kodansha revealed on Twitter that it would be releasing a manga adaptation of The Grimm Variations, a new series set to be released on Netflix next week. The adaptation will be released on April 17, alongside the release of the anime, in Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket service.

The Grimm Variations is a new anime series from WIT Studio and CLAMP, the former known for its work on Spy x Family and the latter best known for series like Cardcaptor Sakura. The series sees the fictional younger sister of the Brothers Grimm reimagining their stories, often in dark and twisted ways.

Here’s how Netflix describes the series:

Once upon a time, brothers Jacob and Wilhelm collected fairy tales from across the land and made them into a book. They also had a much younger sister, the innocent and curious Charlotte, who they loved very much. One day, while the brothers were telling Charlotte a fairy tale like usual, they saw that she had a somewhat melancholy look on her face. She asked them, "Do you suppose they really lived happily ever after?"

The pages of Grimms' Fairy Tales, written by Jacob and Wilhelm, are now presented from the unique perspective of Charlotte, who sees the stories quite differently from her brothers.

Six episodes will be released on Netflix, and each one will focus on a different Grimm story, like Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, and Cinderella. It was announced at AnimeJapan 2024 , alongside another series called Dungeon People that also looks pretty great.
