Animated Ghostbusters Series Gets Exciting New Update at Netflix

There have been murmurs of an animated Ghostbusters series since Netflix greenlit the project back in 2022, but Variety has now revealed that the wheels are in motion at the streaming service.

Four-time Emmy-winner behind The Daily Show , Elliott Kalan, is set to pen the story and executive produce, but plot details for the series remain under wraps now.

The project will be the third animated series from the Ghostbusters universe, with previous renditions including the 140-episode The Real Ghostbusters , which aired from 1986-1991 and Extreme Ghostbusters , the 1997 series.

Now Kalan steps in to add his stamp on the iconic franchise, with Ghost Corps' Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan set to executive produce alongside Kalan on the series from Sony Pictures Animation.

Reitman and Kenan most recently collaborated on Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire , which hit theaters earlier this year to a frosty reception from critics, making just $201.8 million at the box office, a figure similar to the film's predecessor, Ghostbusters: Afterlife . Afterlife was released in 2021 and received a warmer reception from critics, who rated it 63% on Rotten Tomatoes.

When we can expect to hear further developments on the animated series remains a mystery, but more to come from Reitman and Kenan this year, who currently have their hands full with their new film Saturday Night , which hits theaters in October.
