Amazon released the final Rings of Power Season 2 trailer, and it looks like all that disjointed world-building from the first season is paying off. War is coming to Middle Earth, and despite all the confidence of the elves and sturdiness of the dwarves, no one’s ready for it.

If you’ve done your homework and read J.R.R. Tolkien’s appendices at the back of Return of the King, you’ll have a pretty good idea why the enemy of Middle Earth takes everyone by surprise. Like we saw at the end of Rings of Power’s first season, he’s sly and treacherous and entraps his most dangerous foes with deadly gifts that bring them under his influence – the eponymous Rings of Power. Charles Edwards’ Celebrimbor ends up having a very bad day as a result of his gift, and it looks like we might even see the nine human kings shuffle off their mortal coils and become Sauron’s Ringwraiths.

The orcs’ relentless march continues, conflicts with elves ensue, and there’s a series of blink-and-you-miss-it moments with giant spiders, giant eagles, and a giant man that’s probably The Stranger, on his journey with Poppy Proudfellow. Notably absent is any mention of Tom Bombadil, who we know gets at least one song, based on the official soundtrack’s tracklist.

There’s also a handful of shots of Charlie Vickers walking toward the camera wearing a sinister smirk on his face, a smirk that only you can see. It’s a bit on the nose, but at least it’s not fading text telling us this is Morder now.

Anyhow, the point is things are happening . Rings of Power Season 1 progressed in fits and bursts, struggling under the weight of advancing multiple, seemingly disparate stories in the constraints of a typical eight-episode season. Now those stories are starting to converge, though, it looks like Rings of Power might finally come into its own.
