Alien: Romulus has opened with an impressive $108M at the worldwide box office, against a reported budget of $80 million.

The figure, which includes $66.7 million from 49 international territories, puts it among the highest-earning Alien films ever. In fact, it’s second only to 2013’s Prometheus.

Where Prometheus generated $51 million domestically during its opening weekend, Alien: Romulus scored $41.5 million. That’s promising for Disney, the studio behind the latest Alien film, because Prometheus ended up making $276 million in total during its theatrical run.

Additionally, Disney has reported overseas ticket sales for Alien: Romulus are pacing ahead of A Quiet Place: Day One by 47%. A Quiet Place: Day One has now grossed $122 million internationally.

Surprisingly, Alien: Romulus is a hit in China. Opening to $25.7 million, it’s now the second-biggest debut of the year for a Hollywood film.

Directed by Fede Alvarez ( Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe ), Alien: Romulus is the seventh instalment in the long-running Alien franchise, which started in 1979 with Ridley Scott’s Alien . It follows a crew of intergalactic colonists as they’re stalked by a highly evolved life form.

Read the Alien: Romulus first reactions – “best in the franchise” with “an insane final act.”
