Star Wars: The Acolyte Won’t Be Getting a Season 2

Star Wars fans were dealt a bit of a blow today after it was revealed that Star Wars: The Acolyte would not be returning for a second season. Or, depending on who you asked, Star Wars fans were dealt a mercy. Either way, The Acolyte won’t be coming back.

The news comes courtesy of Deadline , which cites undisclosed sources close to the matter. The report does not go into detail as to why the series was canceled by Lucasfilm and Disney, but it’s expected that the drop-off of viewers following the first season’s premiere is to blame.

The series got off to a slightly rocky start, as we wrote in our review of Star Wars: The Acolyte, but its cast was very strong and its characters fleshed out. Subsequent episodes improved the situation, fleshing out the story and adding a lot of satisfying intrigue. It even featured a few cameos from big players in the Star Wars universe in episode 8 , including an exciting appearance from Darth Plagueis .

Unfortunately, fans will likely never get to see the rest of Plagueis’ story, which is a bit of a bummer. Star Wars: The Acolyte mightn’t have been the best part of the Star Wars universe, but at the very least it was a breath of fresh air.

While critics loved The Acolyte, though, audiences seemed to hate it , with the series having been hit with a bunch of negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and other sites. It’s hard to tell how much of this was legitimate dislike of the series and how much was intentional and disingenuous review bombing from people with axes to grind about the series’ showrunner, leads, or any other number of ridiculous complaints. You never can tell with Star Wars, which has routinely found itself at the forefront of a ridiculous culture war.
