Lionsgate Issues Apology After Critic Quotes Found To Be Fake in New Megalopolis Trailer

Francis Ford Coppola delivers disappointing chaos in his upcoming film Megalopolis , which is indicative of the entire process that led to bringing the $120 million passion project into the world.

The mess doesn't begin and end with the recent set video showing Francis Ford Coppola's inappropriate behavior ; it has now bled into the distribution process, where a new trailer has been pulled by Lionsgate due to it using fake quotes from prolific critics such as Pauline Kael and Roger Ebert.

Variety released the statement from Lionsgate, who said, "Lionsgate is immediately recalling our trailer for Megalopolis . We offer our sincere apologies to the critics involved and to Francis Ford Coppola and American Zoetrope for this inexcusable error in our vetting process. We screwed up. We are sorry."

Coppola's filmography consists of movies considered to be all-time greats, such as Apocalypse Now and The Godfather , but the Megalopolis trailer wanted to peddle the narrative that Coppola delivers films that last in the audience's memories.

However, it went about it in the completely wrong way, using false quotes from reviews that did not exist.

One of the critics included within that was Owen Glieberman, who said, "Even if you're one of those people who don't like critics, we hardly deserve to have words put in our mouths. Then again, the trivial scandal of all this is that the whole Megalopolis trailer is built on a false narrative."

Glieberman continued, "Critics loved The Godfather . And though Apocalypse Now was divisive, it received a lot of crucial critical support. As far as me calling Bram Stoker's Dracula 'a beautiful mess,' I only wish I'd said that! Regarding that film, it now sounds kind."

Megalopolis has 53% on the review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, with critics calling it everything from " Coppola's twilight magnum opus " to " one of the worst films I've ever seen ".

It will meet its next audience at the Toronto International Film Festival before heading to theaters in September.
