Destin Daniel Cretton, the director behind Just Mercy and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings , has a Naruto live-action project underway, and the original screenwriter, Tasha Huo, has offered an update to Entertainment Weekly about what to expect.

Huo revealed the "script is done" and Cretton "is now doing his stuff" before the film heads into production.

This will be the first time the anime gets a live-action big-screen adaptation, and Huo feels confident that Cretton is the best person for the job.

"[Cretton is] going to be able to capture how nuanced and special Naruto is without getting distracted by the big world that it is, which I think could easily be done by someone who's not a fan or someone who's coming in for a cash payday," Huo told EW, saying, "This is definitely a movie that comes at it from a love of who Naruto is and that character and his relationships."

Masashi Kishimoto, the artist behind the popular manga that the film is based on said, "When I heard of Destin's attachment, it happened to be right after watching a blockbuster action film of his, and I thought he would be the perfect director for Naruto. "

Kishimoto had enjoyed Cretton's previous films and said "his forte is in creating solid dramas about people" made him "convinced that there is no other director for [ Naruto ]."

Kishimoto says Cretton is "an open-minded director who was willing to embrace my input," and Kishimoto "felt strongly that [they] would be able to cooperate together in the production process."

Naruto doesn't yet have a cast or release date, but as per IMDb, the story follows an outcast in a village of ninjas who sets out to become the leader and strongest warrior of his home.
