The Crow First Reactions – Critics Say New Remake Is “Lacklustre”, “Tedious” and “Uninspired”

In February, Bill Skarsgård and FKA twigs featured in the first look images from The Crow , and now the initial reactions are rolling in as the film prepares to head into theaters today.

The first reactions to the re-make of Alex Proyas' 1994 film are not cut and dry, however, because there's a blend of positive and negative opinions on Rupert Sanders' reimagining of this tale of soulmates Eric and Shelly.

Starting with the positive, Kenzie Vanunu at Offscreen Central calls The Crow "the most romantic, bloodiest time you can have at the movies so far this year", and Reyna Cervantes says, "The chemistry between the leads is great" and that "there's some excellent visuals and jaw dropping gore."

Another positive reaction comes from @JorgieWrites, who says they "had a lot of fun with The Crow " and echo Vanunu and Cervantes' thoughts on the dynamic between Skarsgård & FKA Twigs, saying the two "have great chemistry" and "the first portion of the film focusing on their romance was [their] favorite."

On the flip side, the negative opinions go deep on dissecting what didn't work with The Crow , with Zach Pope saying it is "a lackluster experience that loses the gothic horror of the original" and "Bill Skarsgård tries his best but it's not enough."

Next Best Picture's Matt Neglia calls The Crow "a tedious and uninspired remake that should have remained in development hell", going in on Sanders' work as a director, saying, "this lifeless goth romance butchers nearly every creative decision."

The Crow is in theaters now.
