Only Murders in the Building Season 4 First Reviews – Critics Say New Season Is “A Return to Form”

Steve Martin, Selena Gomez and Martin Short are back in season four of Only Murders in the Building , which returned to Hulu last night with an episode titled " Once Upon a Time in the West ", seeing the trio take a trip to Hollywood where a studio prepares to adapt their podcast for the big screen.

The first reviews are now in for season four, matching the overwhelmingly positive reaction of the first three seasons –– with critics saying this new chapter is " a return to form " and is " the biggest, funniest, and most meta season of the series yet. "

Caitlin Albers at Looper.com says, " Only Murders in the Building only gets better and proves the right chemistry can carry any show further than imagined", with Nick Shager of The Daily Beast saying this season, "Elicits more laughs than any small-screen comedy since last year's installment."

Dan Einav at Financial Times teases what we can expect from season four, saying it "tackles themes of loss and loneliness, growing up and ageing, self-doubt and self-certainty without ever succumbing to earnestness is a testament to the light-touch writing and charming performances."

The reviews are mostly positive. However, there are a couple of critiques lurking beneath the sparkle, saying season four " doesn't quite clear the high bar previous seasons " and " around episode five things are starting to go off the rails ", but for the most part, people seem smitten with the fourth season of Hulu's hit series.

Only Murders in the Building Season 4 Review Roundup

    • Collider: Witty, wonderful, and weird in all the best way s, Only Murders in the Building continues to be one of the best mystery shows out there...
    • RoberEbert.com: For its star-packed fourth outing, Only Murders in the Building blends the celebrities-playing-a-heightened-version-of-themselves with the ever-precious play-within-a-play, and the result is pretty fun.
    • Inverse: Only Murders in the Building Season 4 is the perfect escalation of the series and proves that with the right ideas and the talent both in front of and behind the camera to match, things can just keep getting better — and bigger.
    • Guardian: This kind of clever, long-game plotting means Only Murders is genuinely gripping as a murder mystery. It’s not a perfect series, but it’s close: this show remains an extremely rare example of a comedy-drama that does both equally, and incredibly, well.
    • Daily Telegraph: Yet the charm of Only Murders goes beyond the celebs and the steady stream of one-liners and slapstick humour. Alongside the comedy, the show has always been dutifully about constructing a compelling whodunnit.
