James Bond Film Gets Exciting Director Update

The next James Bond film is one step closer to finding its director.

That person is reportedly Edward Berger, who directed last year's multi-Oscar and Bafta-winning WW1 epic, A ll Quiet on the Western Front . According to The Telegraph , Berger is the frontrunner to direct the next James Bond film.

Berger’s next film, Conclave , is a psychological thriller based on the novel by Robert Harris, which releases 29 November, 2024. After that, he’s got a free slate. But Berger’s not the only one in the sights of long-time Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.

They “could theoretically opt again for Campbell, who marshalled both Brosnan and Craig’s debuts with aplomb, and is still working at 80,” writes the report. Although it’s worth keeping in mind, we’re still at the early stages.

There’s no script, no setting, and no title. Right now, says an insider, “a small number of contenders have been summoned to Eon Productions’ London HQ for what have been described as ‘a first round of speed dates’.”

There’s a lot of work still to do. Not only does production have to choose its source material from Ian Fleming novels (or else create an entirely new story), but they also have the Herculean task of finding a new James Bond to play the role for the next decade or more.

There’s plenty of time, though. Bond 26 is allegedly targeting a 2027 release, which is six years after Craig’s final Bond film, No Time To Die . That’s about the same length of time between 1989’s License to Kill and 1995’s GoldenEye.

Regarding the next star, whoever that may be, Pierce Brosnan approves of Aaron Taylor-Johnson being the new Bond .
