After four years of rumors and speculation among pro-wrestling fans and insiders, the release date for documentary series, ‘Mr. McMahon’ has finally been revealed.

Releasing on Netflix on September 25, 2024, the documentary looks to dive into the life and career of Vincent Kenedy McMahon, owner/chairman of WWE from 1982 to 2022. Chris Smith of Tiger King fame and Bill Simmons serve as executive producers on the series, and speaking to Variety , Smith promises that it will reveal who Vince McMahon really is.

“The goal behind ‘Mr. McMahon’ was to pull back the curtain and reveal the true Vince McMahon, obscured beneath the persona he presented to the world,” Smith says. “Over the four years of production, the story evolved in truly shocking ways, culminating in some extremely harrowing allegations. The final product is a revealing documentary that we believe offers a rich and nuanced portrait of the man and the complex legacy he left behind.”

Stories of the many quirks and foibles of Vince McMahon are well-known among fans. Some are weird and silly, like hating it when people sneeze in front of him, or not knowing what a burrito is despite having one for lunch every day. Meanwhile, others are a lot harder to laugh at, such as his business tactics in buying out and closing many federations in the 1980s after specifically promising his father he wouldn’t do that; his behavior surrounding the 1994 steroid trial; and the recent allegations made in the lawsuit by Janel Grant, who according to one of her spokespeople, was not interviewed for the documentary.

Originally announced in 2020, there have been conflicting reports over the years from wrestling insiders as to how involved McMahon was in the production of the documentary, but we do know that several members of the McMahon family have been interviewed for it. How ingrained Vince was in production – and whether that changed after the sexual assault and trafficking allegations were made – will likely determine how the documentary views McMahon’s legacy.

His influence on wrestling’s on-screen product is controversial as well. He’s credited with bringing the then-WWF to its highest highs with the famed ‘Attitude Era’ in the late 1990s that saw stars like The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and Triple H become mega-stars. However, most fans also blame him for the severe dip in quality and ratings WWE saw throughout the 2010s and early 2020s, where many fans left in favor of alternatives like AEW.

It led to much rejoicing when McMahon stepped down from his role as chairman in 2022 and has caused WWE to heat up significantly since, with this year’s WrestleMania 40 serving as a fresh start for WWE and breaking a bunch of industry records.
