Josh Brolin is close to joining the cast of DC’s much-anticipated Lanterns series, according to new rumors.

The actor, who played both Thanos and Cable for Marvel, has been offered the starring role in the upcoming HBO series set in the DC universe.

That’s according to a report by NexusPointNews , which states “This version of the character is described as a Lantern legend and will be a veteran member of the Corps. White actors in their forties and fifties were being looked at for this role until it was determined that Brolin was the top choice for the role of Hal Jordan.”

However, just because Brolin has been offered the role, there’s no guarantee he’ll accept it. He can still turn down the offer, which means showrunners will simply move down the shortlist to their next available option.

Jon Hamm was also approached to play DC superhero Green Lantern, but the 2011 one.

Ryan Reynolds played Hal Jordan in 2011’s poorly received Green Lantern movie, the last time we saw the superhero portrayed in live-action. The character’s powers revolve around a ring that grants them the power to conjure anything they can imagine out of pure energy, using their imagination and willpower.

Created by John Broome and Gil Kane, Hal Jordan debuted in DC’s Showcase #22 in 1959. A former military pilot, Jordan is given the ring when he discovers a dying alien, and becomes his successor in the intergalactic peacekeeping corps known as Green Lanterns.

Chris Mundy ( Ozark ) will be showrunner of the eight-episode season. Executive producers, meanwhile, are Tom King ( Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow ) and Damon Lindelof ( Watchmen, Prometheus ).

Lanterns is set to begin shooting in January 2025. It will be firmly part of the new DCU, which is titled Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. According to the first synopsis, it sees two intergalactic cops (Hal Jordan and John Stewart) investigate dark crimes in the American heartland. Nathan Fillion is also expected to appear as fellow Green Lantern, Guy Gardner.
