Dan Da Dan aired its first episode on Crunchyroll and Netflix over the weekend, and the response so far has been nothing short of phenomenal. Fans around the world have flocked to the series, with social media abuzz with excited viewers keen to see the next episode after its stylish debut. One of those fans, though, is a pretty big name — Hideo Kojima.

That’s right, the creator and director of the very well-loved Metal Gear Solid series has shared his adoration for Dan Da Dan in a post on Twitter, where he says he largely checked out the anime on a whim. Kojima says the anime “really hit home” for him, as he grew up reading occult and UFO magazines, just like main character Okarun in the anime. He also had some fond words for its animation and production values.

“I haven’t read the original manga, but being from the generation that loves the occult and UFOs, it really hit home,” Kojima said on Twitter. “I used to skim through ‘Mu’ magazine too. I like Science SARU’s unique use of lenses and their animation style.”

Kojima is a noted film and TV fanatic, posting several times a week about new films and TV series he’s watching, something that’s turned into a bit of a game among his followers. Many believe they can figure out Kojima’s opinion on a film or TV series depending on how much he writes about it. Dan Da Dan, for example, was a long, glowing post, while his recent tweet about ‘Salem’s Lot consisted solely of “Watched Salem’s Lot.”

Kojima isn’t the only one in love with Science Saru’s stylish new anime, though. In our Dan Da Dan review – which was based on the first three episodes – we had nothing but positive things to say, calling it the best anime in years.

Fantastic character work, a rock-solid storyline, and the most appealing art style in anime to date put Dan Da Dan in a league of its own, setting a new bar for everyone else in the industry to try and match.
