This city has gone bat shit crazy over bike lanes. It seems as if every road has to be chopped up and part of it designated for a bike lane just in case some one decides to ride a bike down it. Do bike riders then stay in their bike lanes? Of course not. They are free to roam across any piece of asphalt they find, sometimes the sidewalks as well. Then when it come time to a intersection bikes just zip through. But if you're in a car trying to make a turn, good luck not hitting one of them as they zip by without a care in the world. Even after the light turns red and you finally can turn they just keep zipping by. Finally you use your horn and they reluctantly stop and curse at you so you can turn. This is the new normal in NYC.
