STUART — Two people survived a rear-end crash that sent their SUV off the Roosevelt Bridge and into the Safe Harbor Harborage Yacht Club condominiums parking area early Friday, police said.

The female driver and her male passenger were in stable condition at a nearby hospital, Stuart police Lt. Richard Shine said Friday.

The man driving the Tesla that hit their Toyota 4Runner was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash, said Shine, who did not release his identity. He could face more charges as police continue to investigate, Shine said.

The SUV was northbound when it was hit, sending it over a concrete barrier, through a metal guardrail and over the east side of the bridge around 1:30 a.m., Shine said.

"When (officers) got there and did the investigation of the crash, they learned that the vehicle was hit from behind by a Tesla that drove off from the scene," Shine said. "They didn’t have to go too far to find the vehicle. ... He didn’t live too far from where the incident occurred."

Florida Department of Transportation workers examined the bridge and marked off the impact site with cones and tape, but no lanes of travel were affected, Shine said.
