As summer is winding down and people are planning on activities to do near home, some of the “normal” things we used to do in Boise, as well as throughout Idaho, are just not happening this year. But some are. Of course, the word “normal” is taking on a new meaning as well. Since it doesn’t look as if Covid-19 is going away anytime soon (see my recent article on the subject), activity planners have had to make adjustments to their schedules, even cancelling some activities altogether.

Let’s take a look at what is “Open,” and what is “Cancelled” this year in and around Boise.

    Alive After Five — CANCELLED

Alive After Five has been a downtown staple even before I moved here in 1993. According to the activity’s Facebook page, the Summer Concert Series would run from June through August every Wednesday, held in the Grove Plaza downtown Boise. There was always live music, cool beverages, vendor booths, and delicious food. You would typically see youngsters (of all ages) cool off in the central splash fountain where water would “come out of the pavement.” You could dance, listen, mingle with friends, meet new friends. The 5 PM to 8 PM free event was something we got used to enjoying during the summer. Unfortunately, it has been cancelled until [at least] summer 2022.

    Western Idaho Fair — OPEN

I found it a bit of a surprise that the Western Idaho Fair in Boise was going ahead as planned for this year’s fair as it had been cancelled in 2020. With its theme of “Ready to Party Like it’s 2019?” the fair has typically been the last “ten days of summer” before school restarts for the fall. With school schedules really thrown into a mess due to the covid pandemic, some schools are starting soon in mid-August, meaning that mid-week would be the best time to attend the fair if you prefer smaller crowds. You can get into the fairgrounds for under ten dollars, add another fifteen dollars for a wristband that allows you to ride the carnival rides all day long. The fair is open from noon until eleven pm each day except that final when it closes at nine.

St. Alphonsus Festival of Trees — CANCELLED

A holiday treat each winter for as long as I remember, the Festival of Trees pitted amazing tree decorators against each other all in the name of good fun and raising money. The indoor activity brought people out in winter clothing to “ooh” and “aah” as they strolled from one gorgeous Christmas tree to the next. Titled, “All About the Magic of the Season,” the Saint Alphonsus Festival of Trees has kicked off the holiday season in the Treasure Valley. The holiday season is a time for coming together to celebrate and revel in tradition. It is also a time for thinking of others and giving of ourselves. With ongoing challenges presented by COVID-19 and with an abundance of caution based on where the community is with the pandemic, the Saint Alphonsus Foundation has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 Festival of Trees and return with a fun, festive and safe event in 2022.

    Treefort Music Fest — OPEN

Still on the schedule for next month, the Treefort Music Fest is all set for five days of music, presentations, and workshops in downtown Boise. There is a variety of ticket options from one-day main stage passes to everything you’d want (and can manage to do do) in all five days. With a ridiculously full schedule of events (that’s my description, not theirs), it’s clear why the events take place at dozens of venues in downtown Boise. That’s also a benefit for the merchants s music fans get to visit some places that might be new to them. If you’re a music lover, Boise’s famous Treefort Music Fest is an activity you MUST attend next month.
