STURGIS — The Sturgis golf team enters this season as the defending champions of the Wolverine Conference.

Through just a couple of competitions this year, the Trojans once again feel strong about their team. They opened the season late last week at the Shamrock Invitational hosted by Shamrock Hills Golf Course in Gobles. The team placed fourth overall out of 14 teams with a score of 391.

Maddy Webb led the Trojans on the links with a Top Five finish, firing a round of 83. Piper Sterling carded a round of 98 and Mia Martinez shot 101. Both Mazie Sterling (109) and Ximena Medina (111) shot personal-best rounds.

The JV team finished 14th with a 527.

Then on Monday, Sturgis finished with a third-place finish at the Wolverine Conference opener hosted by Lake Cora Golf Course in Paw Paw. Sturgis shot a team score of 194. Plainwell's 188 won the tiebreaker over Vicksburg (also 188).

Leading the way once again was Webb. She started her individual conference title defense with a one-over-par round of 36. That is the second-best score by a Sturgis golfer for a nine hole round in school history.

Piper Sterling shot 47 and Martinez added a 52. Mazie Sterling shot 59, Medina added a 62 and Gabby Netke shot 63.
