Michigan State Police are continuing the investigation into a shooting that left a woman dead and a man critically injured Aug. 16 in the White Pigeon McDonald's parking lot.

According to a MSP social media post, troopers and detectives responded to the shooting at 103 South U.S. 131 about 4:30 p.m.

"A preliminary investigation revealed that a separated married couple (man/wife), both of Sturgis, met at the stated McDonald's location for their customary child exchange. With the female victim sitting in her vehicle and the male suspect standing outside, a verbal altercation took place," the post said. "At some point the suspect allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot the victim multiple times and then subsequently shot himself. The victim, a 25-year-old Sturgis woman, was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries. She later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. The suspect, a 29-year-old man also from Sturgis, was transported to Kalamazoo Bronson Hospital where he remains in critical condition with life-threatening injuries."

No other injuries were reported and it is believed the couple's children were not present and with other family members.

MSP was assisted at the scene by multiple agencies, including White Pigeon and Constantine Police and Fire units; Three Rivers Police and Ambulance; St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office; Life Care Ambulance, Med Flight and Samaritan Flight.

This incident remains open pending further investigation, autopsy results, and lab analysis.

When completed, a copy of the report will be submitted to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office for review.

"Help us keep all those affected by this incident, including the children and both families, in our thoughts and prayers," MSP said in the post.

Lt. DuWayne Robinson said in an email Thursday there were no updates other than "the suspect remains in critical condition with life-threatening injuries."
