You spend about a third of your life sleeping, which means your bed should be the coziest place in the house. One thing that can help with that? Buying the best bed sheets you possibly can. While that sounds simple, shopping for sheets and other kinds of bedding can be a little overwhelming. We don’t blame you for feeling this way. There’s an endless number of different fabrics to choose from (who among us really understands the difference between bamboo, cotton , and cotton percale, anyway?). And not to mention, a vast array of colors, designs, weights and thread counts to consider, as well.

Pro: This means you can certainly customize your bed to be the ultimate haven of your dreams —from cozy fleece bed sheets to cooling sheet sets for the hot sleeper to satin sheets that won’t soak up all those expensive face serums you wear to bed. Con: There’s just way too much to choose from—where do you even start?

What Type of Bed Sheets Are the Best?

As it turns out, the best types of bed sheets can actually vary, depending on the season. In the summertime, Katie Elks, the designer director at Brooklinen, says to look for linen or percale sheets. “Both are great for hot weather and keep you cool,” she explains. “Linen sheets or a cotton percale weave are the best if you run hot at night,” she adds, noting how percale has more of a crisp, cooling feel and linen is ultra-breathable and more moisture-wicking.

Depending on where you live, percale and linen sheets can work well year-round, but if you want something cozier, you might want to try flannel sheets or warmer cotton options like the Casper SuperSoft Sheet Set . And, if you’re a hot sleeper and find that percale and linen don’t quite cut it, go with something even more lightweight, like bamboo or eucalyptus sheets.

What Sheets Do 5-Star Hotels Use?

Sheets can vary at 5-star hotels but, Elks says, many luxurious hotels use percale sheets. “They have a cool feel and a matte finish that is often popular among our hotel clients,” she notes. In some cases, hotels also partner with brands (such as Brooklinen) and provide a way for you to purchase a set of hotel-worthy sheets for your own home.

What Sheets Feel Best to Sleep On?

As far as feel is concerned, Elks says it’s all about the material and while thread count can play a role, it’s only one part of the equation. For example, the Brooklinen Classic Percale sheets have a thread count of 270, and the Brooklinen Luxe Sateen has a thread count of 480. “At first glance, you might think Luxe is better because of the higher thread count, but it all depends on your sleeping preferences,” Elks explains. “Both are super breathable and made of long-staple fibers, so it’s up to your sleep style to know what’s best for you.”

What Thread Count is Best for Sheets?

“There isn’t necessarily a ‘best’ thread count you should buy, but the optimal thread count depends on the customer and the type of fabric they prefer or how they sleep,” Elks notes. Instead of hyper-focusing on thread count, she recommends considering the material type and how it will best serve your sleep preferences.
