The Rings of Power is the most expensive TV show in history—some reports put it at $58 million per episode, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to a product viewers and critics enjoy. With the release of season two, you have to wonder whether the show’s been canceled after those very mixed reviews.

Reviews for the show’s premiere season were so bad that Amazon actually disabled the ability to give the show a rating on Prime Video. Critically, the show scored pretty well, it debuted with an 85% approval rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes but holds a 39% with audiences. Season two has seen somewhat of an improvement in audience reception with an increase to 47%. You can’t help but wonder with its lukewarm reception…

Is The Rings of Power canceled?

The Rings of Power is certainly not canceled, it’d be a huge investment to essentially just throw in the trash. As of August 2024, the show’s five seasons are fully planned and the third is already been in development.

“The rights that Amazon bought were for a 50-hour show. They knew from the beginning that was the size of the canvas—this was a big story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. There are things in the first season that don’t pay off until Season 5,” showrunner JD Payne told Empire in 2022. “We even know what our final shot of the last episode is going to be.”

On Reddit , fans have speculated what that final shot will be. “The One Ring settling on the bottom of the Anduin?” one wrote, referencing the opening sequence of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings : The Fellowship of the Ring . “That scene was a PJ exclusive. Not how it was written. Isildur was actively on his way to give the ring to Elrond in Imladres when his caravan was ambushed by orcs,” replied another.

Is the show really as bad as people say?

Lots of fans have jumped to The Rings of Power ‘s defense on social media . Contrary to some critics’ reviews, one argued, “I feet the episodes are beautiful, well thought out, pacing is great and the action and fantasy moments are sensational. I’m beyond excited to see the rest as they’re released,” they said. “The nitpicking about pacing, if the story is boring, fan service, fan fiction, galadrial etc etc etc is beyond ridiculous at this point. [sic]”

Fantasy epics, after all, can be quite slow in parts. World-building takes a long time (anyone who’s read a Brandon Sanderson book will know that the first two-thirds of any of his books can be a little tedious but it pays dividends in an action-packed final third).

“I agree with the general sentiment, but the reviews are generally and genuinely pretty good. The big issue seems to be a lot of critics think the Stranger’s story is a burden on the season, but everything else- especially Eregion- is top tier [sic],” another fan wrote.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is available to stream on Prime Video.
