We’ve seen some pretty weird scents pop up recently, especially on the food front. Whether you’re dying to smell like a matcha latte or something a little more unusual (no judgement here), 2024 is the year of not just eating your favorite food—but smelling like it too. Because I’m so invested in PerfumeTok, I always want everything to smell good, including my apartment. And although I’m a lifelong tomato hater, the promise of a fresh-smelling space thanks to Malin + Goetz’s new Tomato Home Spray intrigued me. Beyond that, the room spray claims to be formulated with odor-neutralizing technology, and that alone made me want to try it.

For Malin + Goetz loyalists, a tomato scent is far from surprising. After all, this is the brand that has everything from a strawberry candle to cannabis perfume. The concept of a tomato room spray was pretty out-there to me , but Malin + Goetz first released a candle with the same tomato scent back in 2020. So even though I’m a little late to the game, eyebrow-raising scents like these are quite literally the future.

I always ask for no tomatoes on my sandwiches, but I was super excited to try out a tomato scented spray. If you’re into perfumes, you know that tomatoes have quickly become a popular scent note—and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a tiny bit curious to see what all the hype’s about. At $52, this room spray is no walk in the produce aisle. But, if you’re a die hard tomato girl, it might be hard to resist. On the other hand, if you’re like me and aren’t too crazy about actual tomatoes, rest assured that the Malin + Goetz Tomato Home Spray doesn’t bring about any tomato eating—just an incredibly fresh scent.

Our Malin + Goetz Tomato Home Spray Review

I hate to admit it, but the only “room spray” I’ve really dabbled with is Febreze. (If that even counts.) When it comes to neutralizing odors in my apartment, I typically opt for a candle or an oil diffuser. In my mind, those methods just seemed more convenient than having to constantly respray. But, the Malin + Goetz Tomato Home Spray makes a lot of intriguing claims. In addition to being odor-neutralizing, it’s alcohol-free formula is also said to protect surface areas and enable the scent’s longevity.

Alcohol-free scents are becoming more and more common. And because this is a room spray, rather than a traditional perfume, it makes sense that alcohol isn’t needed. We’ve all sprayed perfume in the air to make a room smell better, but it’s not always the smartest choice given how flammable perfumes can be. So although I’m not an avid home spray purchaser, I still recognized how necessary a product like this seemed. Not to mention, I’ll jump at any chance to test out a weird scent.

At first sniff, the tomato scent surprised me. It automatically transported me to a garden in Italy, and left me feeling oddly refreshed. Tomato might be the most noticeable note, but this room spray is more well rounded than you think. It has top notes of basil, green ivy, lavender, and mint for that crisp feeling. Plus, earthy middle notes like tomato, mandarin, and petitgrain—along with base notes of cedar wood and green pepper for that musky touch. Thankfully, rather than only smelling tomatoes, I got a whiff of the whole greenhouse. I truly believe if the scent was turned in to an actual perfume, it would seriously pop off on TikTok.

The truth is, that first spray left me hooked. The tomato scent was perfect to mask any unpleasant odors, and it was earthy and subtle, unlike the headache-inducing scents most air fresheners bring. Plus, if I was hosting a few friends, I could totally make them believe I was harvesting my own fruits and vegetables in my apartment. To sum it up, if you ever feel like your usual room spray or candle is too much to stomach, you might want to try out the Malin + Goetz Tomato Home Spray—it’s subtly fresh without being overpowering.

As for longevity, I still noticed the scent well after it was sprayed. Naturally, it smells best immediately after being sprayed. And strangely enough, the smell that lingered was a bit different than its initial scent. Certain notes seemed to stick way better than others, specifically the green pepper. As gross as it sounds, the leftover smell reminded me of Doritos. Maybe that’s a side effect not everyone is willing to see through, but I personally didn’t mind it too much.

Besides the mild Doritos scent that reminds me to respray, I actually did enjoy the Malin + Goetz Tomato Home Spray. It’s unlike any other scents I own, and it’s definitely a unique choice. It’s the perfect scent to spray in your kitchen when you want to neutralize the smell of food you cooked last night, but I also wouldn’t hesitate to use it in the bedroom or bathroom. It’s on the pricey side, but I found myself reaching for it again and again. And because it made my apartment smell like a lush vegetable garden, I don’t think I’ll ever go back to Febreze.
