Local Playwright, Alum to Present Free Play at Bandshell in August
HAWTHORNE, NJ - A local playwright and Hawthorne High School alum is presenting her latest production at the town bandshell with two dates in August. Estelle Barbieri has written and directed the play “Out of Fuel”, which is to be performed at the town bandshell on Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10 at 7 p.m.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE FREE TAPINTO.NET NEWSLETTER Estelle, who was a Hawthorne High School senior at the time, started the Summer Student Theatre Program in town a few years ago during the COVID lockdown. "The main reason she organized this group was because the high school theatre club came to a halt during that time and it allowed those students interested to continue performing in an outdoor environment," her mom, Susan Barbieri, said. "It also allowed Estelle to pursue her passion as a writer and director." Estelle is currently a film major at Hofstra University. Newark PD Reports Gunpoint Robbery and Assault at Dollar General
On Sunday, July 21, a Dollar General store located in Newark fell victim to an armed robbery, as per the authorities. According to Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé, a man walked into Dollar General at 420 Springfield Avenue at 8:29 a.m. through the rear entrance on the right side. The perpetrator then proceeded to demand cash from the cashier, while gesturing that he had a handgun. In the process, he also assaulted the employee on her left side.

The Verona High School football team will hold its first 7 on 7 tournament on Wednesday, July 24, beginning at 4 p.m. There are four pools set for the contest and 16 high schools will be competing, from Don Bosco Prep to Elizabeth, Mahwah, Montclair Kimberley Academy and more, as well as VHS. Seven on seven is a non-contact version of football that emphasizes passing and receiving skills. A Harrison man is facing charges after allegedly shooting a teen who knocked on his door and then ran off as a prank, police say.
