SUFFERN – Calling all fans of the “Brat Pack” and lovers of 1980s movies. Rockland County’s Penguin Rep Theatre will host a special event with actor and director Andrew McCarthy on Saturday, July 20.

The event at Lafayette Theater in Suffern will include the American premiere of McCarthy’s new documentary, “Brats.” A conversation between McCarthy and Joe Brancato, Penguin Rep Theatre’s founding artistic director, will follow.

“I think for many people, especially people of a certain age … It’s a chance for them to come back to those years that they enjoyed so much ‒ the ‘Pretty in Pink’ and all those wonderful movies,” Brancato said.

Written and directed by McCarthy, "Brats" dives into some classic films of the 1980s and talks to members of the “Brat Pack” about what it meant to a part of the pack. Featured are Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez and more.

McCarthy's latest book is a memoir on the same topic. Titled “BRAT: An 80s Story,” McCarthy reflects on his days in the Brat Pack. His memoir will be a part of the post-screening discussion.

“The amazing thing about Andrew is that (he’s) not only known for those years ‒ “Pretty in Pink” and all those wonderful pieces,” Brancato said. “(He’s) also a fine established theatre artist and a writer ‒ an incredible writer.”

McCarthy appeared on Penguin's stage in "Hate Mail" in 2001. "Working at Penguin Rep was one of the most ‘sneakily satisfying’ experiences in 35 years of acting," he said in a statement.

The screening and conversation are part of a series of “Brat Pack” movies being shown between July 19 and 21 at the Lafayette Theater as part of its $1 Classic Film Festival. The schedule — featuring "St. Elmo's Fire," "Pretty in Pink" and others — is on the Lafayette's website.

The event comes as the Lafayette Theater in Suffern celebrates its 100th anniversary. First opened in 1924, the 1,000-seat, single-screen movie theater plays both current films like “Inside Out 2” and classic films like “A Clockwork Orange.” It was designed by architect Eugene DeRosa, and it originally featured an organ to play musical accompaniments for silent films and live performances.
