Gas leaks cost US fire departments more than half a billion dollars each year, finds study
Responding to gas leaks cost U.S. fire departments over $564 million in 2018, according to a new study published in Energy Policy. The study, led by PSE Healthy Energy, is the first to estimate the financial burden placed on first responders by gas leaks. In 2018, New York City experienced 22,090 gas leak incidents—more than the next 25 cities combined—conservatively costing the city $70 million.

First project under Gowanus rezoning launches leasing for luxury apartments
The first project developed under the Gowanus rezoning has launched leasing. Developed by Domain Companies and VOREA Group, 420 Carroll consists of a 21-story tower and a 16-story tower connected by an underground tunnel. Situated on the Gowanus Canal, the development includes 360 apartments, with market-rate rentals currently priced from $3,925/month for studios to $9,600/month for three bedrooms. Approved by the city in 2021, the rezoning upzoned 82 blocks of the neighborhood to create 8,500 units of housing and new open space.

Hospital for Special Surgery names medical leadership in Florida
New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery appointed new medical director roles in Florida. Sheeraz Qureshi, MD, is chief medical officer of HSS Florida and succeeds Douglas Padgett, MD, according to a July 22 news release. He has been co-chief of HSS Spine and holds the Patty and Jay Baker Chair in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery. In the expanded role, he will oversee clinical operations and quality for HSS' Florida presence and work with HSS Florida CEO Tara McCoy to grow access to care.

YONKERS, N.Y. — Redwood Realty Advisors has arranged the $2.6 million sale of an 18-unit portfolio in Yonkers. The portfolio comprises eighteen units across multiple buildings at 53 & 74-76 Glenwood Ave. Michael Scrima and Thomas Gorman of Redwood Realty Advisors represented both the buyer and seller in the deal. Neither party’s name was disclosed.
