The Suffolk City Council unanimously approved the second phase of a 12-inch water main extension project on Wilroy Rd.

During their Wednesday, Sept. 4 meeting at City Hall, the council held a public hearing on the project, which plans to add approximately 3,300 linear feet of new 12-inch diameter water main extension piping from the 2000 block of Wilroy Rd (Executive Dr.) to River Creek Dr. Easements, either permanent or temporary, are required for the construction, maintenance, and operation of the extension.

Suffolk Director of Public Utilities Paul Retel provided more details during his presentation.

“It’s an important project because it provides system redundancy with a second feed going to the Olde Mill Creek and Nansemond Crossing subdivisions, which are currently fed from the back and have only one connection,” Retel said. “In essence, this project loops the Olde Mill Creek and Nansemond Crossing subdivisions. If something happens to one of the feeds, we should still be able to serve that subdivision.”

Retel also explained that the extension transfers water services currently connected to the City of Portsmouth’s water transmission main. There was no opposition during the public hearing.
