Variety shop joins Downtown Suffolk’s retail scene

Downtown Suffolk welcomed a new neighbor in their business lineup Saturday morning. Next to Nothing Variety Shop, located at 157 W. Washington St., celebrated its grand opening on Saturday, Feb. 3, with both store staff and Suffolk City Council marking the occasion with a ribbon cutting. The store offers various products for shoppers, such as new and used fashion apparel, accessories, furniture, home decor, and more. Vice Mayor Lue Ward congratulated the Next to Nothing staff for choosing Suffolk to embark on their business venture.

“With all the interest we have and all the investment we have going on in this area, we welcome you with that vision that you had to open up this store,” Ward said. “…You could’ve picked other places, but you picked Suffolk to grow with us and for that, we really thank you so much and right now, congratulations on many successes for you.”

Following the ceremony, as attendees had a chance to browse and shop, Next to Nothing Store Owner Latreva Mitchell talked about how “excited” she is to finally get the store open.

“It’s been a long road,” Mitchell said. “I’ve been working on this for, like, three years. Had a whole lot of hiccups, but I’m glad to be open.”

Mitchell’s aunt Angela Hill talked about what shoppers can expect from the store, including hair products, makeup, wigs, shoes, and more.

“They have everything here to offer, and it’s new and used. They have good prices. There are some beautiful and amazing things in here so far as I can see,” Hill said.

On her future with Next to Nothing Variety Shop going forward, Mitchell expressed wanting to connect with the community.

“I’m looking forward to building relationships with the other small businesses around here, the community,” she said. “I’m looking forward to meeting new customers, getting to know them, and just being here in the city of Suffolk.”

Hill followed up on her niece’s desire to connect with the Suffolk community.

“She’s looking forward to serving the community where she was born and raised and getting to know more people but being in Suffolk, a lot of people might not know your name, but they know each other. And she’s here to serve, and if there’s something particular you’re looking for, come on to Variety,” Hill said. “There’s a big variety to buy and just build a relationship, not just with people, but with other small black business owners and let the community come together and work together.”
