Terry Peterson Companies, Pembroke Realty Group and members of Suffolk City Council celebrated the completion of Hampton Roads Crossing in North Suffolk on Thursday, April 25.

With the ribbon cutting and opening of Era at Park 216 Apartments, a luxury apartment community for ages 55 and older, development investors and city officials marked the final phase in Hampton Roads Crossing’s completion, a 132-acre mixed-use community with over 2,500 community members, 30 retail businesses and more. During the ceremony, Terry Peterson Company Principal John Peterson III expressed the challenges of building the apartment complex.

“As you all know, we have dealt with some delays, material delays and everything else. Despite all that, our construction team and the whole team at Terry Peterson was able to bring this building in just [on] budget,” Peterson said. “I really want to congratulate your team for getting this built.”

Peterson reflected that the overall “Crossing” project started in 2006 following the council’s establishment of the Mixed-Use Development (MUD) Overlay District zoning ordinance in 2005.

“We saw the property, and right before 2006, the City of Suffolk’s council had the foresight to approve the mixed-use development overlay…,” Peterson said. It gave us the flexibility to design the community that you see here. So I get to give Suffolk a lot of credit for having the vision to see that what people want is to live in a place like this where you can live here, you can shop here, you can work here…”

Mayor Michael D. Duman called Era “a long time coming.”

“It’s probably one of the first and most significant mixed-use developments that we’ve had in our city… and we’re very fortunate to have the Peterson group with the reputation and the quality of the products that they produce,” Duman said.

Duman and Peterson both commented following the ceremony, with Duman noting how Terry Peterson Companies has been involved in “multiple projects” in Suffolk.

“They have always been very agreeable to work with and they’ve always produced an outstanding product,” Duman said. “So I am elated that they chose this and hopefully, they will be looking at other projects within our city.”

Peterson is very grateful for the completion of Hampton Roads Crossing and Era at Park 216.

“Projects like this don’t get done without partnerships,” Peterson said. “And everyone here represents a partner in a different way, particularly the City of Suffolk and the council members who joined us and the Mayor. This is sort of a culmination of 18 years of work, and that kind of project doesn’t get built without cooperation and partnership.”

As part of the Park 216 Apartments, Peterson says that Era residents will have access to a fitness center, walking trails, a pool clubhouse, and other amenities. He also discussed the importance of providing another housing option for the “Crossing” community.

“There’s a term ‘multigenerational living’ where people at different stages in their life have different needs, and what we’ve tried to do with all the different home types at Hampton Roads Crossing is give everybody at a different stage of their life an option to be right here,” Peterson said.
