Suffolk residents came out to the Treasurer’s Tax Relief Seminar in April to learn about real estate tax relief opportunities.

Held at City Hall Chambers on Tuesday, April 23, over 70 attendees stopped by to learn about real estate and property tax relief options for elderly and disabled residents as well as disabled veterans. Suffolk Treasurer Ronald H. Williams, alongside Chief Deputy Treasurer Andrew R. Owen, Commissioner of the Revenue Susan Draper, Real Estate Tax Relief Application Manager Mary Holmes, and City Real Estate Assessor Billy Butt, also provided an overview of their duties and their respective office functions.

In a statement on the event, Williams expressed the importance of bringing awareness of tax relief opportunities available to the elderly and disabled.

“Citizens with high mileage on their vehicles were encouraged to apply for a reduction in their personal property assessment with the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office, which could lead to a lower personal property tax bill,” Williams said.

Owen also provided a statement expressing the office’s goal of providing tax relief to as many as possible.

“When a citizen opens their tax bill, we want it to be as low as possible,” Owen said.

Elderly and disabled residents must apply for real estate tax relief with the Suffolk Department of Social Services by June 30. Disabled veterans can apply anytime. For more information on offered tax relief opportunities, residents can call 757-514-4288.
