Two historic sites in Suffolk listed on Virginia Preservation’s endangered list

Two of Suffolk’s African-American Waterman Villages are listed on Preservation Virginia’s 2024 list of the most endangered historic places. Oakland and neighboring Hobson were also recently named to the list, which was released on Tuesday.

Each May, Preservation Virginia releases a list of historic places across the Commonwealth facing imminent or sustained threats. The list, which has brought attention to more than 180 sites in Virginia, encourages individuals, organizations, and local and state governments to advocate for their preservation and find solutions that will save these unique locations for future generations. The program has a track record of success. Only 10% of the sites listed so far were lost to demolition or neglect.

Nearly every region in Virginia is represented in this year’s list, with historic places often facing development pressures and neglect.

“These historic sites represent important spaces in communities throughout the Commonwealth. All are under threat, all irreplaceable and all propose solutions to ensure a viable future,” said Elizabeth S. Kostelny, Preservation Virginia CEO. “From Hampton to Roanoke, Loudoun County to Brunswick County, these historic sites are in need of awareness and assistance to ensure they are preserved for future generations.”

Oakland and Hobson join nine other Virginia historical locations that were added to the endangered list this year. This list includes:

• Richmond Community Hospital, located in the CIty of Richmond.
• Grand Contraband Camp, located in Hampton.
• Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, located in Albemarle County
• Massies Mill Odd Fellows Hall, located in Nelson County
• Lower Surry Church, located in Surry County
• Jackson Blacksmith Shop, located in Goochland County
• Waterford Historic District, located in Loudoun County
• Blick Plantation, located in Brunswick County
• Washington Park Caretaker’s Cottage, located in the City of Roanoke
