Purchase of Suffolk Presbyterian Church property complete

TowneBank and Suffolk Presbyterian Church finalized the 410 N. Broad St. property sale on May 30. According to city records, the bank purchased the property for $1.4 million.

According to Allie Wittkamp, director of marketing communications for TowneBank, plans to build a new location on the site are in the beginning stages .

“We are still in the process of developing the site plan and beginning the process of seeking approval from the City of Suffolk,” Wittkamp said. “We hope to move forward with the project sometime this year.”

In a May newsletter to parishioners, the church announced its intention to remain in downtown Suffolk and lease space inside West End Baptist Church, located at 105 St. James Ave. The church cited unreliable infrastructure in the building it had worshiped in for nearly 50 years as the reason for the sale and relocation.

“Faced with a crumbling roof that has become uninsurable, leaks that led to mold, and an unreliable infrastructure, church elders decided it was necessary to find a new place for Suffolk Presbyterian to thrive,” the newsletter reads.

While property maps appear to have two parcels, Wittkamp says both were sold as one.
