Suffolk City Council approved an ordinance to accept $2,884,081 for a bridge replacement project on Nansemond Parkway over Beamons Mill Pond.

During their Tuesday, July 2 council meeting, Deputy City Manager Kevin Hughes detailed that funding for the project comes from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) State of Good Repair Program.

“Adoption of the ordinance will increase the planned revenues and the expenditures of the fiscal year 2024-25 Capital Programs Fund Budget by $2,884,081,” Hughes said.

Other approved items included $4,000 in funding from the Virginia 9-1-1 Services Board Public Safety Answering Point Grant Program to support the Suffolk Police Department’s 9-1-1 Public Safety Communication Education and Training for Emergency Communications Operators in the Emergency Communications Center. Likewise, an ordinance to amend Article XXII, Solar Revenue Share for Solar Energy Projects of the city code, authorizes the City of Suffolk to collect revenue via revenue share with solar energy facilities that produce less than five megawatts. Also, an ordinance authorizing the City Manager to execute a Communications Facilities License Agreement with Cox Business was approved. Hughes detailed that VDOT is in the process of upgrading the fiber communication network that “allows the city to stream various traffic cameras to their traffic monitoring system” and that VDOT is funding “a dedicated COX Business fiber connection that will be installed in the City Hall telecommunications room.”

“The agreement allows Cox Business to install the communications equipment in City Hall and authorizes access to their equipment when necessary for maintenance and troubleshooting,” Hughes said.
