Gov. Youngkin honors recently retired SPS bus driver

Rutherford Ulysses Whitfield continues to make waves for his seven decades of service to Suffolk Public Schools, with even Governor Glenn Youngkin recognizing his service.

During the Thursday, July 11, School Board meeting held at City Hall, the 85-year-old retired SPS bus driver, who has served since he was 16, was honored for his over 70-year career with Youngkin’s resolution and letter sent to SPS Superintendent Dr. John B. Gordon III’s office. During his attendance at the meeting, SPS Communications and Community Engagement Officer Anthonette Dickens read Youngkin’s letter to Whitfield and the SPS community.

“Dear Mr. Whitfield, on behalf of the Commonwealth of Virginia, congratulations on your retirement from Suffolk Public Schools as a bus driver with over 70 years of service. What an amazing life of service to the Suffolk Public Schools,” read Youngkin’s letter. “Your unwavering dedication has left an indelible mark on the lives of countless children in the Suffolk community. Your 70 years of service behind the wheel of a school bus are remarkable. Still, your contributions extend far beyond, encompassing roles as a High School Cafeteria Director, and, an Emergency Room Assistant. Your selflessness and generosity have greatly contributed to making Virginia the best place to live, work and raise a family. Your example inspires us all to give and love wholeheartedly.”

Youngkin’s letter continued.

“The First Lady joins me in congratulating you and commending you for your commitment to the highest ideals of service. We wish you the best in your next chapter,” it reads. “Thank you for strengthening the spirit of Virginia. Sincerely, Governor Glenn Youngkin.”

After presenting Whitfield with the resolution, Gordon thanked him for his service.

“Thank you again Mr. Whitfield for all of your years of service,” Gordon said. “I think you have officially, once again, have made Suffolk a national story.”
