    Suffolk Art League announces new student scholarship winners

    The Suffolk Art League recently announced the winners of their 2024-25 Annual Student Scholarships.

    Students in grades 6-12, either public, private or homeschool are eligible for one of the two scholarships in the arts from SAL. Offering two annual scholarship opportunities for young artists, each is funded from private donations to help enhance students’ arts education and development. SAL says this year they have received “nearly 50 combined applications” in submissions with 15 award recipients receiving $6,550 in funding.

    The Sharon Picot and Chip Picot Scholarship is available for youth pursuing visual, performing, musical, theatrical, literary, and other categories. This year’s award amount is up to $6,000.00. The John R. Taylor Memorial Scholarship is available to youth pursuing visual arts. This year’s award amount is up to $550.00.

    Recipients for the 2024-25 Sharon Picot and Chip Picot Scholarship are:

    • Ashiya Bland, Kings Fork High School Senior; plans to use funds for dance competitions and choreography fees.
    • Brooke Christy, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Sophomore; plans to use her funds for an intensive summer dance camp.
    • Alora Coleman, 7th Grade Homeschool Student; plans to use funds for ballet classes and workshops.
    • Lauren Eichman, Nansmeond River High School Senior; plans to use funds for art classes and supplies.
    • Shreya Kuchibhatla, Col. Fred Cherry Middle School 7th Grader; plans to use funds for piano and violin lessons.
    • Emiri Lawrence, 7th Grade Homeschool Student; plans to use funds for art supplies and private lessons.
    • Luke Moore, Lakeland High School Junior; plans to use funds for voice and piano lessons.
    • Haylee F. Neprud, Lakeland High School Sophomore; plans to use funds for a violin and additional violin accessories.
    • LeAnn Purkey, Nansemond River High School Senior; plans to use funds for private voice lessons.
    • Nevaeh Raysor, Nansemond River High School Senior; plans to use funds for band camp and lessons.
    • Solara Schuler, Col. Fred Cherry Middle School 8th Grader; plans to use funds for dance competitions and lessons.
    • Irie S.A. Snow, John Yeates Middle School 6th Grader; plans to use funds for art supplies and summer art camps.

    Recipients for the 2024-25 John R. Taylor Memorial Scholarship are:

    • Amy Fox, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Freshman; plans to use funds for pottery classes and materials.
    • Ava Shepheard, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy 8th Grader; plans to use her funds for art supplies.
    • Karson Whitaker, Lakeland High School Freshman; plans to use her funds for a digital camera and photography classes.
