Developers blame city for delays in big Bakery Square expansion
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- After newly two years of seeking the necessary approvals, a half a billion-dollar development to bring new housing, offices and stores to East Liberty is still on hold. The city planning commission this week once again delayed final approval of Walnut Capital's plans to double the size of Bakery Square. The development would bring sorely needed new jobs and residents to Pittsburgh but developers say the city has hit them with more than a year of delays. When Google took over the Nabisco plant 14 years ago, Bakery Square was born, the tech giant spawning a new development of...
Steelers veteran believes undrafted rookie is 'going to be a great player'
It's not often that an undrafted rookie makes enough of an impression to earn reps with the first-team defense to start training camp, but that's exactly what is happening in Pittsburgh.Undrafted rookie cornerback Beanie Bishop has been one of the biggest stars of Steelers training camp thus far, flashing his coverage ability over the first two days. My thoughts on Day 2 of #Steelers training camp. CLAIRTON, Pa. (KDKA) -- U.S. Steel will be conducting emergency tests at its Clairton plant on Saturday. The company will test emergency system equipment from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 27. U.S. Steel says the annual test makes sure the plant's emergency system is working so employees and surrounding communities can be protected in case of an actual emergency. The test will begin with a simulated emergency and evacuation, using sirens, lights and loudspeakers that U.S. Steel says will be heard in nearby communities. The plant's emergency systems will be activated one at a time, and the company says there are five distinct areas that will be tested, taking up to seven hours. Local government and emergency agencies, including fire, police and Allegheny County 911, have been notified, U.S. Steel says. No timetable for return of Steelers QB Russell Wilson
Russell Wilson’s first training camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers has not started off on a high note. When speaking with reporters at the close of practice, Wilson could offer no timetable for his return. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Brian Batko reported that Wilson wanted to be back today, but Mike Tomlin is being patient with the injury. There are 14 more practices left with two weeks before the first preseason game on August 9. It was Tomlin’s decision to sit Wilson out after the quarterback awoke with calf tightness on Thursday. The injury certainly doesn’t bode well for Wilson as he attempts to learn a new offensive system for the umpteenth time in his 13-year career. It does benefit Justin Fields, though, who would’ve been on the short end of reps distribution. Russell Wilson said he wanted to practice yesterday but it is going to be smart about it. He has spent the season playing all three outfield positions and has been a decent hitter at the plate.
Return for Diontae Johnson on ‘hot seat’ with training camp underway
Cornerback became a positional need for the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason, as both Levi Wallace and Patrick Peterson left in free agency. Unfortunately, it came at the expense of Pittsburgh’s most productive offensive player, wide receiver Diontae Johnson. The Steelers sent Johnson and their No. 240 pick to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for cornerback Donte Jackson and No. 178 pick (defensive lineman Logan Lee). TribLive’s Joe Rutter believes that Jackson is at risk of losing his job. He laid out five players on the hot seat at training camp. At the top is everybody’s favorite defensive end, Cameron Heyward. Here’s what Rutter had...
Troy Polamalu in disguise at Steelers training camp
It’s not easy for Troy Polamalu to be anywhere in Pittsburgh and go unnoticed — unless he hides the hair. NFL reporter Bo Marchionte posted a photo of Polamalu on the sideline at Pittsburgh Steelers training camp on Friday. The day started with unusually cooler 70-degree temperatures, so the California native got away with a Steelers hoodie, his famous locks all tucked up in a bucket hat and shades to complete the disguise. The legendary Steelers safety was recently named to ESPN’s top 25 players of the 21st century. Polamalu was the lone Steeler on the list, landing at No. 16. Not surprisingly, Tom Brady came in at No. 1.
