Usually a cracked windshield is from pilot error turning the heated windshield on when the windshield is too cold. Proper technique is to turn the windshield on for a few seconds, then off for a few seconds and continue to cycle it for a couple minutes. Then leave on. This happens because the windshield usually wasn’t turned on when on the ground, forgetting to turn it on, then at altitude when getting ice, the pilot turns on the windshield cracking it. Extremely expensive pilot mistake.
