A prisoner who authorities say walked away from a California conservation camp in 2011 has been recaptured in New York City, prison officials reported.

Eduardo Hernandez fled the Delta Conservation Camp in Suisun City on Nov. 15, 2011, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a June 28 news release.

He was serving 13 years in prison after his 2005 sentencing in Los Angeles on a charge of carjacking with an enhancement for use of a firearm, the agency said.

The escape of Hernandez and another man from the minimum security camp sparked a manhunt in Northern California, a KOVR story at the time reported.

Hernandez was arrested in New York City at 4:18 p.m. May 20, the agency said. He will be extradited to California for possible escape charges.

The agency did not say how Hernandez, now 42, was rearrested, the Los Angeles Times said.

“Since 1977, 99 percent of all people who have left an adult institution, camp, or community-based program without permission have been apprehended,” the corrections agency said in the release.

Suisun City is about a 50-mile drive northeast from San Francisco.
