SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Sullivan Veterans of Foreign Wars has a helicopter above its post once again.

It has been a little over one year since the Sullivan VFW has had a helicopter above their post. Finding the machine came from perfect timing but getting it to the VFW took many local hands.

A tornado, in the Spring of 2023, destroyed the old Huey Helicopter. With this new one, the crew took extra precaution to protect it such as bird screens.

The helicopter was flown in the Vietnam War. Today, it stands as a symbol of history and sacrifice for the community, as well as ties families together.

“It’s particularly special, me and my dad kind of orchestrated getting it here, the first Huey. 30 years ago, when I was eight, I was here watching them put the Huey up and now my son, who is about eight, is here watching us put this one up. it’s a pretty special event for us and the community as a whole.”

Evan Hamilton – Senior Vice Commander of the VFW

The first Huey was put up in 1994 and now, exactly 30 years later, a new one has taken its place.
