CUMBY — The Cumby Trojans started their district schedule on the right foot Friday with a 36-16 Homecoming win over the Linden-Kildare Tigers. Early on, the Trojans built up a huge lead that would hold up for the entire game, as they won their third consecutive game.

The Tigers won the coin toss and elected to defer, giving the Trojans the ball to start the game. Linden-Kildare attempted an onside kick to start the game, but Cumby recovered.

The Trojans’ opening drive started with a fiveyard run by Dakari Johnson and a 16-yard run by Chett Vaughan. Unfortunately, the Trojans’ drive stalled after that, and they ultimately turned the ball over on downs.

The Tigers’ first drive resulted in a three and out, and they were forced to punt.

The Trojans’ ensuing drive began with a seven-yard run by Chett Vaughan. After a negative run and false start, the Trojans improved their field position when Channing Herman hauled in a 26yard reception.

One play later, the Trojans scored the first touchdown of the game when Johnson rushed into the end zone from 17 yards out. Cumby’s two-point conversion attempt failed, and they settled for a 6-0 lead.

The Tigers got great field position on their next drive after an illegal kick out of bounds. Linden-Kildare leaned on the run game and managed several first downs before the first quarter came to an end, with the Trojans still ahead 6-0.

As the second quarter began, the Tigers’ drive stalled, and they turned the ball over on downs, giving control back to the Trojans.

The Trojans’ next drive started with two good runs. After an offsides penalty gave them a first down, Johnson broke off a 30-yard run, giving Cumby solid position again.

Unfortunately, the Trojans’ drive sputtered after that, and they turned the ball over on downs.

The Tigers failed to move the ball down the field on their following drive. Their punt didn’t travel far either, giving Cumby good field position.

The Trojans’ next drive got off a slow start with an incompletion and a holding penalty. A pair of good runs and an offsides helped get the drive going.

Eventually, the Trojans scored again when Chett Vaughan threw a threeyard touchdown pass to Braylon Boggs. Johnson then rushed into the end zone for a two-point conversion, extending Cumby’s lead to 14-0.

The Trojans then got the ball right back with the recovery of an onside kick. Two plays later, Cumby scored again when Chett Vaughan scored on a 49-yard touchdown run. Mitchell Kerby then rushed for the two-point conversion, raising Cumby’s lead to 22-0.

After an illegal kick out of bounds, the Tigers tried to mount a scoring drive before halftime, but were unsuccessful, as the Trojans carried their 22-0 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Tigers initially began piecing together a solid drive. However, the Trojans got the ball back when Boggs intercepted pass. Though he returned the ball for a touchdown, the score was waived off due to an illegal blindside block.

It only took the Trojans two plays to find the end zone again, as Chett Vaughan found Chayton Vaughan for a 15-yard touchdown reception. Kerby once again scored the two-point conversion, as the Trojans raised their lead to 30-0.

Though the Tigers got good field position with another illegal kick out of bounds, their next drive only last three plays. The Trojans got the ball back again when Jackson Petty recovered a fumble.

Cumby’s next drive began with a 12-yard run by Kerby. Two plays later, Chayton Vaughan hauled in a 19-yard touchdown catch. The two-point attempt failed, as the Trojans’ lead climbed to 36-0.

After the kickoff, the Tigers once again turned the ball over, as Adrian Radney recovered a fumble. Unfortunately, the Trojans failed to move the ball down the field, and were forced to punt.

The Tigers then embarked on a long drive, where the third quarter ended, with Cumby still leading 36-0.

As the fourth quarter started, the Tigers continued their drive. Eventually, they polished off a 10play drive with a six-yard touchdown run. A successful two-point conversion trimmed the score to 36-8.

After Cumby recovered an onside kick, their drive began with a 13-yard run by Kerby. From there, the drive stalled, and they were forced to punt once more.

The Tigers then went on an eight-play drive, which they capped off with a 25yard touchdown reception. A successful two-point conversion trimmed the score to 36-16.

After the Trojans recovered the onside kick, Chett Vaughan kneeled the ball three times to run out the rest of the clock, as the Trojans capped off a 36-16 Homecoming win.

Chett Vaughan completed four of 18 passes for 63 yards, with three of his completions resulting in touchdowns. He was also the Trojans’ leading rusher, gaining 83 yards on six carries and scoring another touchdown.

Johnson rushed for 54 yards on six carries last, scoring a touchdown. Kerby tallied 29 yards on five carries. Jace Evans rushed twice for 24 yards.

Chayton Vaughan was the leading receiver, catching two passes for 34 yards and two touchdowns. Herman caught one pass for 26 yards, and Boggs hauled in one pass for a three-yard touchdown.

Defensively, Canyon Talley was the leading tackler with eight tackles. Right behind him was Justin Green with seven. Radney came up with six tackles.

Other tacklers include Hunter McPherson, five; Jusber Nena, four; Boggs, Jaxon Hudson, Johnson and Osvaldo Ruiz, three each; Easton Elmore, Herman, Jorge Reyes and Kolby Vandiver, two each; and Hayden Baxter, Gunner Campbell, Jeremy Dignam, Evans, Luke Green, Petty and Sonny Pierce, one each.

Justin Green also recorded a sack. Nena forced one fumble, which was recovered by Petty. Boggs recorded an interception, and Riley Evans added one pass breakup.

With the win, the Trojans started district play at 1-0, and improved to 3-2 on the season. This marks Cumby’s first three-game football winning streak since 2019.

The Trojans’ next game is Friday, when they travel to Detroit to take on the Detroit Eagles.
