    CUMBY — The Cumby Lady Trojans lost their second consecutive game Friday, suffering a heartbreaking five-set home loss to the Avery Lady Bulldogs. Despite fighting hard to force a fifth set, the Lady Trojans couldn’t complete a valiant comeback attempt, suffering a bitter defeat.

    The first set started off with the Lady Bulldogs jumping out to a quick 5-1 lead. The Lady Trojans answered with a 4-3 scoring run, trimming the deficit to 8-5.

    The Lady Bulldogs then went on a 6-2 scoring run, increasing their lead to 14-7. The Lady Trojans responded with five consecutive points, pulling within 14-12.

    Avery then stepped up their game, embarking on a 7-2 scoring run to raise their lead to 21-14. Though the Lady Trojans managed to go on a 3-1 scoring run to cut the score to 22-17, the Lady Bulldogs then closed the set out with their own 3-1 scoring run, winning 25-18 and taking the lead.

    The second set began with the Lady Trojans establishing a quick 5-1 lead. The Lady Bulldogs then went on a 4-1 scoring run to pull within 6-5.

    The Lady Trojans then scored seven consecutive points, increasing their lead to 13-5. Avery continued to fight back, going on a 6-1 scoring run to trim the deficit to 14-11.

    Cumby then used a 5-1 scoring run to extend their lead to 19-12. The Lady Bulldogs responded with a 6-4 scoring run, cutting the score to 23-18.

    From there, the Lady Trojans closed out the set with the final two points, winning 25-18 and tying the score at 1-1.

    The third set opened with the Lady Trojans establishing an early 3-1 lead. This was followed by a 6-1 scoring run by the Lady Bulldogs, who pulled ahead 7-4.

    The Lady Trojans then caught fire, going on a 6-3 scoring run to tie the score at 10-10. The Lady Bulldogs answered back with a 6-1 scoring run, pulling ahead 16-11.

    Cumby then embarked on an 11-5 scoring run, pulling ahead 22-21. Unfortunately, that lead wouldn’t hold up, as the Lady Bulldogs scored four unanswered points to close out the set, winning 25-22 and taking a 2-1 lead.

    The fourth set kicked off with the Lady Trojans taking an early 3-0 lead. The Lady Bulldogs then scored five consecutive points, pulling ahead 5-3.

    The Lady Trojans answered back with a 5-1 scoring run, taking an 8-6 lead. After Avery scored back-to-back point to knot up the score at 8-8, an 8-2 scoring run by the Lady Trojans gave them a 16-10 lead.

    The Lady Bulldogs continued fighting hard, going on an 8-5 scoring run to trim the accord to 21-18. From there, the Lady Trojans closed out the fourth set with a 4-2 scoring run, winning 25-20. This tied the score at 2-2 and sent the game to a fifth set.

    The final set opened with both teams battling back and forth, leading to a 6-6 tie early on. The Lady Trojans then managed a 3-1 scoring run, taking a 9-7 lead.

    The Lady Bulldogs continued to play hard, going on a 6-4 scoring run to tie the score at 13-13. The Lady Trojans then blew a chance to close the game out with a 14-13 lead, as Avery tied the score at 14-14.

    Avery then blew a chance to end the game with a 15-14 lead, as the Lady Trojans tied the score at 15-15. Cumby then squandered a second chance to end the game with a 16-15 lead, as Avery scored again to force a 16-16 tie.

    From there, the Lady Bulldogs took advantage of their second chance to end the game, scoring the final two points and winning the fifth set 18-16, handing the Lady Trojans a disappointing five-set loss.

    With the loss, the Lady Trojans fell to 6-22 on the season. They resumed district play Tuesday, welcoming the Greenville PTAA Lady Panthers to Cumby Gymnasium.
