    The 3rd Annual Help-A-Child Ag Team Build-Off was held Friday, Oct. 18, in the Equine Pavilion parking area at the Hopkins County Regional Civic Center.

    In this timed competition, teams are given just four hours to construct a project using cutting and welding equipment.

    The top four completed projects are then auctioned the next day as part of the Help-A-Child Benefit, which benefits charities that support children in need in the Northeast Texas area through services and scholarship opportunities.

    A total of 34 teams from 26 Northeast Texas schools participated in Friday’s competition.

    This year’s competitors were asked to build a Santa Maria grill, which is a height-adjustable cooking grate on rails welded to a deep metal firebox.

    This year’s judges were David Maxton, a former ag teacher who spent more than 30 years at Mount Vernon ISD, and Mike Giles, who spent 45 years working in the welding industry.

    The top 10 teams from the Third Annual Help A Child Ag Team Build Off included: 1. Celina ISD 2. Saltillo ISD 3. Bland ISD 4. Newton Team #9 5. Newton Team #11 6. Rains ISD 7. Sulphur Bluff School 8. Sulphur Springs ISD

    9.Greenville 10. Boles The top four projects from the Celina, Saltillo, Bland and Newton teams were auctioned off at the Help-A-Child Benefit Saturday, Oct. 19. The Grand Champion Celina FFA team project brought $1,500 from Dan Froneberger and Broadway Vet Clinic. The Reserve Champion Saltillo FFA project, built by Kason Deleon; Grayson Gurley; Brandon Metcalf and Angel Interiano, brought $1,500 from Bell Concrete. The third place Bland FFA team project brought $1,000 from Cliff Jones and the Newton FFA fourth place project brought $1,100 from Crimson River Cowboy Church.
