GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — Redrawn districts will impact how an outgoing representative is replaced following her resignation announcement.

On Tuesday, state House Representative Ashton Clemmons (D-District 57) announced she would be resigning next month to take a position within the UNC System. Currently, District 57 lies within Guilford County and includes northern Greensboro and Summerfield.

“It has truly been a great honor to serve the people of Guilford County and the State of North Carolina as a State Representative since 2019. Our state thrives when leaders focus on the people we serve; I am eternally grateful for the opportunities to learn deeply about our great state and move forward solutions for North Carolinians,” Clemmons wrote on X as she announced her resignation.

It’s up to the Guilford County Democratic Party to fill the vacancy both in the current North Carolina House of Representatives and on the ballot for the redrawn District 57.

In a memo sent to members, GCDP Chair Kathy Kirkpatrick wished Clemmons well in her future endeavors and outlined the two-step process that they would have to perform to replace her.

Because District 57 was redrawn during Clemmons’s term, some precincts that were in District 57 in the 2022 election will no longer be within the district for the 2024 election, and a few precincts were added.

For the same candidate to both take the seat as drawn and run for the seat as newly redrawn, the candidate would need to live where the two boundaries overlap.

However, the party is not required to pick one person to fulfill both roles. That means the person who replaces her as representative of District 57 as it is currently drawn could be different from the candidate selected to run in her place for the newly redrawn District 57.

Guilford County Democrats will meet at 9 a.m. on Aug. 3 to elect a replacement to complete Clemmons’s term. Then, the same day, around 10:30 a.m. they will nominate someone to take Clemmons’s place on the ballot in November.

“There will be a candidate forum via Zoom on July 23 @ 6:00. The audience will be able to ask questions of the candidates,” Kirkpatrick wrote in her email.
